I’ve cast my vote, my choice for Canada Reads is Icefields by Thomas Wharton. Tom writes the blog The Logogryph which has Buddhist content I’ve linked to in the past. I support both the book and the author.

As for the nomination mentioned a couple of days ago. It went to the late Michael of One Foot in Front of the Other. The poem Fatigue was recommended to me by a sangha friend.

  1. That poem, “Fatigue” cuts straight through to the core of what we’re all doing, getting older, getting nearer our end.
Even without having terminal illness it is a gift to waken each morning and realise I’m still here.

  2. I love the line “my arms don’t listen any more”. It can apply to any bit of our bodies which doesn’t work as it once did.

  3. Norman, I beg to differ. While it is true that passing years bring infirmity, sometimes sooner sometimes later, being present now is time-less. So, is it not the case that thinking about oneself in terms of passing time is part of the illusion we travel in? Do your paintings age?

  4. Angie thank you old friend for pointing me to the poem. A fellow monk wrote in a birthday card …and don’t forget we were all going to grow old outrageously! She also said, Many happy enjoyments of the Bus Pass, that Holy Grail of omnibus freedom! Too bad the country wide pass doesn’t come into effect until April 1st. As for the outrageously…I’ll have to think about that one.
