Exercising Choice

The last of human freedoms;
The ability to choose one’s attitude
in a given set of circumstances.

Amen to this, no triple amen to this! This is another way of saying ‘let it go’ but somehow adding in the element of choice, and exercising it, makes a huge difference. Works for me anyway.

I first saw this quote tattooed on the arm of a chap in Victoria, Canada. I took a photo but can’t find it at the moment.

  1. Umm. I’m not so sure about that.
    In my experience the degree to which I’m able to choose depends upon the circumstances. Yes, there’s some wiggle room but the amount is not under my control. I think if all most anyone is stressed far enough the capacity to choose diminishes.
    That’s not to deny the opportunity to attempt a more spacious view subject to available awareness but it might be more that:

    The ability to choose one’s attitude
    IS a given set of circumstances. (Note I’ve changed IN to IS)

    Certainly outwith overwhelming circumstance I train to be able to remain spacious with every greater capacity. And I recognised my limits. Accepting those limits whilst practising to expand then is a subtle business I find.

  2. This is one of the pluses of stopping smoking in my daily list of things to be thankful for. Thank you Reverend Mugo for reinforcing how good it feels to have choices.

  3. This quote comes from. Man’s Search for Ultimate Meaning by Viktor E. Frankl. Not to be confused with Man’s Search for Meaning, Frankl’s first book.
