Time for Thanks

Sifting through papers this afternoon I came upon this piece sent to me by a dear friend in Southern California. I think she included it in a care package, December before last.

A Time to Talk
When a friend calls to me from the road
And slows his horse to a meaning walk,
I don’t stand still and look around
On all the hills I haven’t hoed,
And shout from where I am, “What is it?”
No, not as there is a time to talk.
I thrust my hoe in the mellow ground,
Blade-end up and five feet tall,
And plod: I go up to the stone wall
For a friendly visit.

  1. this is a lovely piece.I normally make time for people, but on occasion I have not, and this nearly always causes me to regret the lost opportunity — the ‘hoeing’ will always be there, but the passing friend may not pass by again.
    thanks for this.
