Sanding and Gritting

Trog, dog of the blog! Jazzy from Edmonton, eat your heart out.

Just having a bit of fun. I’d not want any cat fanciers to have their whiskers bent out of shape due to lack of cat photographs. Which reminds me of a cute cat event I witnessed the other day. Sadly I’d not got my camera with me at the time.

A new postulant was being instructed by the Head Novice. They were sitting in the novices common room gazing intently at a piece of paper on the table. Sitting on the table was Smudge, the novices cat. He was gazing at the paper intently too! It turned out that this was instruction on how, when and where to salt and grit the paths around the monastery. More signs that winter is approaching, not that we have that much snow. Ice, yes. Smudge will be out there stalking wildlife in the snow and ice, given half a chance.

A member of Trog’s extended, human, family has recently died. This posting is offered in memory of the newly past on one, and for his family.

  1. I wonder how many cats are called Smudge in the world, and poor things for being called “smudge”. Do we think about their names before we give them? We have three – Rolo ( blinded through abuse before rescued and a glut for the food and a bit if a hisser); Smudge ( who was the last in his litter and the cutest); and Diamond ( a real lad and bro to smudge). However there is a hierachy that has been given and it is King; Lord and of course “Sir Sidney Rough” ( a carry on character). We love them dearly and will have a naming ceremony for them soon. Old companions all.

  2. We used to have a cat called Smudge too,he lived with a neighbour who offered him to us as a kitten when we were in our early teens but our mum said “No”.Years later he kept popping into our house for little visits and then refused to leave. He was a very handsome cat and such a character. He used to sleep with his head tucked under my chin and paws at either side of my neck.If I moved the claws would come out and I had to freeze for the rest of the night incase he got my jugular! No idea why our neighbours called him Smudge….We now have a cat called Snowy who was given to us by the owner of the house we bought. She is a little old lady and her owner didnt want her anymore. She is beautiful and so affectionate.Black and white,so again where did the name Snowy come from….?
