Dark And Light Together

One does not become enlightened by imagining figures of light, but by making the darkness conscious. The latter procedure, however, is disagreeable and therefore not popular.

Carl Jung

What is it to make the darkness conscious? Not a procedure I think. Today discomfort, disturbance, emotion. All and more. The world trembles. Tosses and turns this way and that. There is no avoiding the shock waves. We, each of us, absorb the reverberations. All the time. I believe we cannot be anything other than conscious in this way. Dark and light. Together.

  1. This made me think of something I was taught by my grandparents as a kid in the mountains. If I were ever to get lost, depending on which side of the mountain I had gone…in one way I was to follow my shadow depending on morning or afternoon and in the other to follow the sun, depending on morning or afternoon. In other words sometimes the “shadow” led in the right direction, sometimes the “light”…always depending on circumstances, but both had the possibility to lead me back to home and safety.

I’ve been feeling great sadness after the quake and its aftermath. We were in Japan in September and the people were so, so very kind everywhere we went.

  2. That is such a lovely image of light and dark, and also what wonderful advice for when we get lost. All sorts of things about staying calm, walking on, remaining focussed. So simple and yet it had never occurred to me. Thank you for sharing it.
